Sports Illustrated Shoots 2018 Swimsuit Issue in Belize
Photo Shoot in Paradise
Six lucky Sports Illustrated Swimsuit models arrived in Belize this week for a very special photo shoot. Earlier in 2017, Sports Illustrated Swimsuit held their first-ever open casting call for swimsuit models. Over 5,000 women answered the Instagram open call by creating and submitting their own casting video for the 2018 Sports Illustrated Swim Search. View all of the submissions on Instagram with the hashtag, #SISwimSearch.
An initial 35 aspiring models were invited to NYC for an interview and photo shoot. After another set of eliminations, the top six beauties now claim the grand prize — a four-day photo shoot in paradise at Mahogany Bay Resort and Beach Club, Ambergris Caye, Belize. The resulting images will debut SI’s first swim and activewear fashion line appearing in the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue in 2018.
Sports Illustrated Swimsuit is an offshoot of the iconic American sports media franchise, Sports Illustrated, read by a staggering 23 million weekly. Their very first Swimsuit Issue was published in 1964 and has become so popular that today it’s a brand in its own right! This issue features “beauties, beaches and bikinis” in exotic locales throughout the world.
The six models get to experience a special preview of Mahogany Bay Resort before it celebrates its official opening as a Curio Collection by Hilton on December 6, 2017. The ladies just arrived in San Pedro yesterday on a Tropic Air flight. It’s a busy week for the final six who will start their days bright and early with an in-room breakfast before beginning hair and makeup for the days’ shoots. On location photo shoots are scheduled at Mahogany Bay Resort’s Bay Club pool area and cabanas, and at the resort’s Beach Club that includes secluded white sandbar and beach, rooftop sundeck, and overwater beds.
The Belize Six
Olivia, Tabria, Camille, Allie, Iyonna, and Hayley. These are the final six beauties who were chosen to showcase Sports Illustrated’s debut swimwear line and be featured in the 2018 Swimsuit Issue. The press tour kicked off with an appearance on Good Morning America in October 2017, where the ladies shared the unique stories behind becoming an overnight Sports Illustrated model.
While some of the women have pageant and modeling experience, a few are rookies behind the camera. Iyonna Fairbanks from Cincinnati, OH was a security officer just six months before submitting her Instagram casting video to #SISwimSearch. Now, she is in on location with Sports Illustrated at Mahogany Bay Village in Belize.
Tabria Majors from Nashville, Tennessee is another of the final six who are new to modeling. Tabria began modeling two years ago with a mission to promote body diversity in the changing face of the ideal female norm.
Allie Ayers is from a tiny town called Snyder, Oklahoma where she was a state champion basketball player. Allie is a “midi model” whose body type is neither classic runway thin nor curvy. Her middle-sized body type has proven a challenge for Allie to get cast, making it even more of a thrill to make it to the final six photo shoot at Mahogany Bay Resort and Beach Club.

Belize on the Rise
This is just another example of tiny Belize trending in the international tourism arena. Just as visitor arrival numbers have exploded in recent years, we see Belize also catching the eye of major brands who recognize the stunning young Caribbean country as indeed, “mother nature’s best-kept secret.”
In 2016, Coastal Living® and Mahogany Bay Village teamed up to offer Mahogany Bay Homes —customizable luxury residences for full and part-time use that celebrate a stylish seaside lifestyle in San Pedro, Belize. Next, Mahogany Bay Resort and Beach Club welcomes brand partner Hilton to Belize in December 2017 as the very first luxury hotel brand to have a presence in the country. Now yet another monster multimedia brand, Sports Illustrated®, has caught onto the hype. We are thrilled to welcome the world to the undiscovered gem of Belize! Can’t wait to see you in paradise.
